The tree acquires strength. Lignification and rest.
Phenomenon of lignification. The green small branches become brown and become rigid. Depending on the rainfall, and temperature the tree can continue to grow.
Branches grow rapidly
The roots no longer grow in length

Needs of the tree
More or less food, but include specific elements for lignification and preparation of the flowering buds. Possible pruning of the new small branches of the pines to create back budding. Little or no fertiliser. Remove the wire, if necessary. Pay attention to watering.

Placement
The reserves accumulated during spring will be used for lignification of the small branches. The growth in length slows down considerably. However, according to the climatic conditions, the tree can continue to function, for example, if it rains during moderate temperatures. It isn’t the month or the season that are of importance, but the climate at any given moment.

Fertilizing
When heat is too fierce don’t fertilise and withdraw organic pellets from the surface of the pot. If weather is average with temperatures lower than 25degC continue the organic fertilisation.

Watering
Supervise the watering very closely, especially on species that have to be kept in semi-shade. If the roots are over heated, they are unlikely to function any more. Water stagnation could bring partial asphyxiation to the rootlets, which is prejudicial to the health of the tree. Pay particular attention to accent plants and miniature bonsai.

Treatment
Watch out for red spiders (acarina). They are often found under the leaves, which become greyish. Spray water on and under the foliage.

Activities
- European two needle pines: on strong young pines, in good health you can carry out mekiri pruning. This consists of completely cutting off the small branches that have grown since April. Leave only the needles of the previous year and just two to four of the current year. A few weeks later a great quantity of buds will appear between the needles and even on naked wood. If you are not sure of the strength of your pine, practise this pinching only at the end of September to bud next spring.
- Leafy trees: it is possible that the leaves are desiccated by the combined action of the sun, the wind and lack of water. Their edges fade. Under these conditions you can defoliate maples, hornbeam, ash, and hazel.
- Tropical bonsai: outside, full sun with much water and fertiliser. All tasks permitted.
- Azaleas: last pruning at the beginning of the month to select small branches in pairs. Possible wiring. In this case do not spray with water before wiring. The dry wood is less breakable.
- Apple trees: remove the surplus fruits, which tire the tree. From an aesthetic point of view, just a few fruits are sufficient.
- Junipers: possible wiring on lignified small branches. It is always perilous to wire the junipers in growth because their bark is torn off easily and the result may be the death of the small branches.
- Wisteria: to support future flowering, it is necessary to spray normally, but leave the base of the pot to soak in the water (there is an asphyxiating effect on the roots, which supports the emergence of buds with flowers).
- Watering during hot weather: bathe the leaves from the top (that is, with a spray of water) in the evening. If necessary, completely immerse the pot in water once a week, and spray every day.
